BECKENHAM FIDE RATED CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS 2012/3

The first round of the 7 round APA tournament will be held on 11 October and the draw is:

Club Tournament 2012/13

The Tournament this year is being run by John White.

To enable the competition to get off to a speedy start, utilising the quiet period before the leagues begin,
we have produced a preliminary list of players for the two groups. If anybody knows that they will not be
playing, will they please strike their name off the list. Please check that the telephone number given is your
preferred one.

Unless they played last year, we have not included juniors as school commitments and league matches limit
the amount of time available.. However, if any juniors wish to play, again, please let John know by email.

The playing rules will be exactly the same as last year – a two hour handicap. The handicap is one minute of
time for each grading point. For example, if a 120 plays a 150 there is a 30 point difference and therefore a 30 minute difference: thus, 45 minutes plays 75 minutes. Players will toss for colours. As last year, players will be split into two groups; the top two from each group will play a semi-final (the winner of group A plays the runner-up in group B) to produce the two finalists.

To prevent anomalies at the extremes of the grading range, there are two qualifications to the handicap
calculation:

• No player shall have less than 15 minutes time
• A minimum grading of 50 will be used

Anybody who has not played a minimum of two games by Christmas will be removed from the competition
and their results will be ignored. Results sheets will be pinned to the red clipboard.

Prizes & This Year's Classic

At the London League AGM this week, I collected a prize won by our second team.  Thanks to the sponsorship of Chess & Bridge we collected £25 for coming second in Division 5.  Well done to Richard Putman and his team.

Malcolm Pein was at the meeting and spoke about the London Chess Classic 2012 which this year will be even stronger, partly on account of Nigel Short moving from the player's changing room to the commentary box. It's on at the usual venue from 1st till 10th December.

Handicap Quickplay competition for the Rose Bowl.

19 club members attended for this year's event on 28th June 2012. There were two all-play-all groups  with the top two from each group going forward to a final round The winner of the final all-play-all round was Nick Briggs who wins the Rose Bowl. The other players in the final round were Stephen Lowe, Ian Snape and John Duggan.

Club Championship [non-FIDE rated]

This club championship is arranged in two groups with the first round being an all-play-all over the season, followed by semi-finals and then a final on 21st June 2012. The cup was won by Alan Sands who beat Alex Selway in the final.
